Proverbs of Squash : 23 calories per sip, by david jarvis 2022.

When you sit down after training,

carefully consider what nutrition is before you;

put a limit on the calories you consume

and define the vitamins and minerals contained therein.

Do not crave sweets or junk,

for they are deceptive rubbish.

Do not wear yourself out for quick gains.

Slow and sure training is faster than fast training!

When you cast your eyes on the ball, it is not there,

for surely the opponent has already hit it.

Do not move your head prior to hitting your shot;

for the opposition uses body language to anticipate your stroke.

Do not speak at the angry opposition,

for they will despise everything you have to say.

Do not influence the referee except to state “appeal” ;

for the opposition may take heart from your pleading.

A defensive player is strong;

they will play lobs and depth burying you in the deep court.

Apply your heart to cardiovascular training

and your motivation towards incremental improvements.

Do not hold back disciplining yourself.

If you play a thousand shots, make every one purposeful.

With your racket you will strike each one,

With a clearly defined target in mind.

My athlete, if your mind becomes wise,

Then your coaches own heart will rejoice!

Our innermost being discovers joy

when we align our actions and psychology with our goals.

Let yourself not be demotivated by naysayers,

But be motivated by their medicrotity and lack.

For then you will have a future

and your hopes are not dependent upon anyone else.

Listen, my athlete and become self sufficient,

and direct your actions in the right pathway.

Do not be among those who party too much,

nor among those who become obese and lazy.

For a drunkard and a glutton is not athletic,

and laziness will not improve your skills.

Listen to your coach who caused your improvements,

and do love your training partners persistence.

Return gifts with gifts,

and give wisdom and discipline to those wise in discipline.

The coach of a diligent athlete will surely be joyful;

whoever coaches a wise athlete will rejoice with them.

Their mother and father will also rejoice,

and she who gives nutrition to you should be respected.

My athlete, do give your heart to your teammates,

and make your presence raise them up.

For an opponent is a challenge to be overcome,

and an administrator facilitates your pathway forwards.

Do not steal others equipment;

nor break contract with your sponsors illegally.

Who weeps? Who has anxiety?

Who quarrels? Who has complaints?

Who has wounds for unknown reasons? Who has bleary eyes?

Those who drink too much;

Those mixing their alcohol or substances.

Do not look for a drug dealer,

Do not imbide alcohol before your tournament matches.

For in the end those things will destroy your form,

and secrete toxins into your system.

Your eyes will not see the ball,

and your motivation will dwindle into oblivion.

And you will be like a homeless person lying in the gutter,

like one without friends or allies.

You will say: “I cannot train, for I am hungover.

I feel sick and tired.

I’m never doing that again!”

The same old tired promise of the loser.

Proverbs of squash : 17 tight drives, by david jarvis 2022.

Proverbs of Squash : 17 tight drives, by david jarvis 2022.

Better is a tight drive close to the wall

than a court full of open play and winners.

An administrator with insight will rule over an athlete who acts shamefully;

They will privately guide the athlete into redress.

Refining ones shots is silver and ghosting is gold,

but a Coach is the examiner of hearts.

A naysayer fixates attention on hurtful speech,

and a deceptive athlete listens to rumours.

Whoever mocks lesser players insults the spirit of Squash,

and whoever rejoices over anothers injury is unworthy of victory.

Juniors are a crown to the veteran coach,

and professional players are glory to their squash club.

Parroting the greats does not make one great;

How much less, does training at 100 when you are merely a 10?

A gifted player wastes their talents if they do not consciously train;

Every strength and weakness can be improved.

Whoever forgives a transgression seeks a relationship,

but the athlete who keeps harping on a matter seperates close teams.

A private rebuke makes a deeper impression on one having understanding

Than striking an idiot a thousand times.

A bad athlete seeks only to rebel,

but a righteously ruthless athlete will crush them.

Better to meet a bear bereaved of her cubs

Than to argue with a stupid fool.

If anyone gives a good hearted person much badness,

badness will return to their own house.

Arguing with a referee is a waste of energy;

accept the call and attend to this next rally.

Anyone who loves cheating and anyone who hates good

both of them are detestable to Squash.

What use is it to give knowledge to one filled with negativity

When they have no heart for acquiring wisdom?

A true team mate shows love at all times

and is an athlete that excels in times of hardship.

An athlete lacking intelligence agrees with a sponsor

to skip training and do publicity tours.

The athlete who loves conflict must overcome that emotion.

Anyone ranked too high will loose to lesser ranked players.

The athlete who is unfocused will not find success,

and the one consciously lying will fall into ruin.

The coach who trains a stupid player will experience much grief;

and the team mate of a senseless athlete has no joy.

A joyful psychology is great medicine,

but a demotivated player loses momentum.

A cheater will take a bribe secretly

To pervert the course of competition.

Wisdom is obvious to those who are wise,

but the eyes of the fools do not even see the ball.

A stupid athlete makes the same mistake repeatedly

and brings grief to their coach and team.

To punish the one striving righteously is not good,

and to berate decent effort is unmotivating.

A coach of knowledge restrains their words,

and a discerning athlete will remain calm.

A fool speaks muchly, but an athlete moves humanely,

and the one who lets their racket do the talking is wise.

Lost Country, by David Jarvis 2022.

Featured
Lost Country, by David Jarvis 2022.

The love of roads and mines,

of greyed highwayed lanes,

of manicured plantations and barren plains.

Booze running in their veins

Bigots fighting black and white

streams filled with urine and shit.

We know it but do not share it,

our shame kept so private.

I detest urbanised country

its blocks of monstrosities,

of square concrete jungles

asphalt and wanton cruelties.

I hate her cramped horizons,

I hate her chlorinated pools,

Her ugliness and leaders’ apathies

This grey hard city is not for me!

Old forests cut for quick dollars

A tradegy of the fool,

Open pit mines and their scars,

Coal and gas gushing to the moon.

Rubbish infesting our sacred bush,

Where now camels and cats rule,

with cattle and sheep spoiling

once fertile soft red soil.

Core profits and corporations

Stealing your childrens’ wealth

New toys substituted for family health.

We feel ourselves dying

Amid the smoggy air rising

pollutants entering our young ones

twisting their precious minds and genome

whilst the war drums beat accelerando

and the seas coral fade morendo.

Core profits and corporations,

lands of the cursed opals,

For climate change, covid and bushfires

insurers will not fully pay our locals.

Behind closed skyscraper doors

Across million dollar tables;

Can we hear them rubbing their paws

With thoughts of rising profits enabled?

A convict culture country

prosperity bought by thieves.

Stolen generations and lost dignities

with working people on their knees.

In the thirsty front bars

be wary of your drunken gazes

avoid the smoking tars

reject pokies taking your wages.

Though our planet has much beauty

she is deteriorating rapidly.

I know some only pretend to care,

and that is why I share

this story of Australia not so fair.
